The Popular Banjo Jam
Welcome to the Popular Banjo Jam!
When people think of the banjo, their mind often goes straight to bluegrass or old-time music. But the truth is, there’s no reason not to play in other genres, and lots of very good reasons to do so!
Not only is playing along with classic hit songs lots of fun, it’s a great practice exercise. The tempos are often slow to moderate, reducing the temptation to play faster than you should, allowing you to focus deeply on fundamental skills.
All of the songs in the playlist below are in the key of G, and so can be played out of standard G (gDGBD) tuning.
When you click on a video, underneath it you will find the chord diagrams for the chords used in that song, along with the lyrics and chord progression.
So just follow the chord progression and play along in whatever way you can. If you’re just getting started, you can just strum chords on the chord changes. lf you’re further along, experiment with different picking patterns and rhythms to see what feels best.
And you can do so in any style – 2 finger, 3 finger, clawhammer, etc.
Instead of just learning an isolated solo break for a song, instead you’ll be building musical skills in exactly the same way that your favorite players did.
This kind of practice is also ideally suited for those of you who are learning the BRighT Fretboard Mastery System. Use this as an opportunity to locate the positions for the chords up and down the neck.

And I wished I had some money with
Which to buy a round
I wished I'd cashed my paycheck
Before I came to town
But I reached into my pocket
Found three twenties and a ten
It feels so good feelin' good agai
There was old man Perkins
Sittin' on his stool
Watchin' Butch and Jimmy John
Talkin' loud and playin' pool
The boys from Silver City
Were standin' by the fire
Singin' like they thought
They were the Tabernacle choir
And I wanted you to see them all
I wished that you were there
I looked across the room
And saw you standin' on the stair
And when I caught your eye
I saw you break into a grin
It feels so good feelin' good again

Tellin' me what to do
[CHORUS]
Well, I was young and hungry
And about to leave that place
When just as I was leavin'

I said, "You must know the answer"
She said, "No, but I'll give it a try"
And to this very day, we've been livin' our way
Here is the reason why

We blew up our TV
Threw away our paper
Went to the country
Built us a home

Fed 'em on peaches

I IV

I V I
Down on the banks below
VERSE
Well I drew my saber through her
It was a bloody knife
And I threw her into the river
Which was an awful sight
My father he often told me
Money would set me free
If I did murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connelly
Now he sits at his cabin door
Wipin' his tear stained eyes
Gazin' upon his only son
Up on the scaffold high
My race is run beneath the sun
The devil is waiting for me
For I did murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connelly
